South Lake Tahoe – Sierra Central
The city of South Lake Tahoe, California is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is in El Dorado County, California. As the name South Lake Tahoe, California suggests, the city is located on the southern shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake with a surface elevation of 6,225 feet and is located along the border between California and Nevada and is the second deepest lake in the United States. The lake was formed about 2 million years ago and is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area encompassing the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe. The city of South Lake Tahoe was incorporated in 1965 by combining the previously unincorporated nearby communities. Gambling arrived in the Lake Tahoe area in 1944, when Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall opened as one of the area’s first gaming establishments, technically on the Nevada side of the state border in the South Lake Tahoe Nevada gaming area. When the 1960 Winter Olympics came to Squaw Valley, California, Lake Tahoe was put firmly on the map as the skiing center of the western United States.
