Chico East – Sierra Central
The city of Chico California was founded in 1860 by General John Bidwell, who was a member of one of the first wagon trains to reach California in 1843. In 1887, the California legislature established the Northern Branch of the State Normal School of California. Chico, California was chosen as its site, and General John Bidwell donated land from his cherry orchard for this purpose. State Normal School of California would come to be called the Chico Normal School, then Chico State College and finally California State University, Chico. This thriving college community is home to another Sierra Central branch location.
